DSE Workstation Assessments

We provide a range of assessments, from those aimed at simply complying with Health and Safety DSE regulations (simple DSE Workstation Assessment) to a full clinical ergonomic DSE workstation assessment. Complex DSE workstation assessments are most widely used and are appropriate for employees with existing health complaints that require a more in-depth assessment. Under the DSE Regulations employees should have received training in regards to reducing the risks from VDU work as well as an assessment of their workstation, see DSE training for more details.

We provide DSE workstations assessments on an ad hoc basis, aiming to offer an appointment within a week and returning the report within 5 working days. We can liaise with Occupational Health and HR departments on any aspect of the workstation assessment.

We do not have any affiliation to equipment suppliers, making our assessments completely independent. If recommendations include providing equipment we can advise on the options and suppliers available. Liaison with your current equipment provider can also be arranged.

It is a legal requirement (DSE Regulations 1992) to ensure employees that are contracted to work at home have a DSE workstation assessment.

The three levels of assessment are outlined below:

Simple DSE Workstation Assessment
·         30 minutes on site
·         One to one assessment to ensure compliance
·         Immediate adjustments to reduce any risks
·         Professional report with findings, changes made, information given and recommendations to reduce risk

These are our most basic workstation assessment, suitable for when you have a group of staff that require an assessment to meet health and safety regulation requirements, relating to assessing the risks associated with an individual’s use of a computer workstation. This level of assessment would be suitable for example, following office relocation or for new members of staff.

Complex DSE Workstation Assessment
·         60 minutes on site
·         One to one assessment including a subjective assessment of the problems being experienced
·         Immediate adjustments to reduce any risks
·         Professional report with findings, changes made, information given and recommendations to reduce risk

One of the most widely used assessment, appropriate for employees with existing health complaints that require a more in-depth assessment from the simple workstation assessment. This level of assessment would be suitable for example, a member of staff that has reported discomfort when sitting or they experience pain when using their mouse. Consent is obtained prior to the assessment.

Clinical Ergonomic DSE Workstation Assessment
·         Approximately 2 hours on site
·         Clinical, objective assessment of individual
·         One to one workstation assessment
·         Immediate adjustments to reduce any risks
·         Professional report with findings, changes made, information given and recommendations to reduce risk

This assessment is an extension to the complex workstation assessment, as it involves a clinical examination of the individual. These assessments are useful for those members of staff returning to work after a protracted period of sick leave. A manager may require a detailed outline of recommended duties and timescales for the individual to return to work safely.

Where requested we can offer advice on the clinical management of an individual, this can be especially helpful to companies who do not have an occupational health service. The appropriate level of consent is required, depending on whom the report is sent to.
